How GRYTR Race Works

  • 1. Pick Your Race Distance

Choose between the Sprint (9.2k & 2.75 tons), Full (21.4k & 5.5 tons), or Ultra (42.8k & 11 tons) GRYTR race distances. Know your race distances and weights as outlined in the Rulebook and Race Packet.

  • 2. Know Your Race Window

When you register for your GRYTR race, you are signing up for a specific race window during the month of either April, July, or October. Be aware of the start and end dates so that your results are eligible for ranking.

  • 3. Plan Your Phase Timing

Determine when you would like to race each phase and in which order. For the standard race, athletes may perform the three phases in any order at any time during the race window. To earn the Dragon Patch, they must complete all three within 12 hours.

  • 4. Prepare Your Race Course

Lay out each phase so that you have each phase station planned out. Know where you will be skiing, rowing, running, and lifting. Have your weights ready and have a plan for how to attack the race.

Endurance Phase

Start your timer and jump on the ski erg to ski the specified distance. As soon as you’re done, move to the rower to row the correct distance before heading out on a run either on a treadmill or outdoors. Time ends once you have completed the full distance across all three formats.

The Sprint distance is 2k each, Full is 5k each, and Ultra is 2 x 5k each.

Hybrid Phase

This is another continuous timed effort that starts with an 800m run and then goes directly into 50 pullups. Run another 800m and then complete 50 burpees. Run another 800m followed by 50 weighted reverse lunges at 50/40lbs. Run another 800m followed by 50 thrusters at 20/10 lbs.

The Sprint distance does this once, Full does it twice, and Ultra repeats it four times.

Strength Phase

This is another timed phase to see how quickly you can lift the cumulative target weight from the ground to above your head. Choose your weight and format, such as a barbell, dumbbells, kettlebell, or sandbag. Use your preference of clean and press or snatch, but just make sure the weight touches the ground and locks out above your head.

The Sprint distance lifts 1 ton (2,000 lbs), Full lifts 2 tons (4,000 lbs), and Ultra lifts 4 tons (8,000 lbs).

Don't forget to record your times, save some proof, and submit your results when you're finished.
