Virtual Fitness Racing
Test your grit, strength, and endurance wherever you are with our online leaderboards.
Race Format
GRYTR is a fitness race that can be done anywhere in the world, on your schedule. It is designed to test your functional strength, speed, and endurance with simple exercises that are anything but easy.
The race is composed of three phases that must be completed during the specified month-long race window (April, July, October). You choose the order of the phases and where you would like to perform them.
- Endurance Phase: Ski, row, and run
- Hybrid Phase: 800m runs mixed with 4 strength movements
- Strength Phase: Clean and press weight from the floor to over your head
To earn your Dragon Patch, complete all three phases within 12 hours.
Submit your results online along with proof of completion to be entered into the overall standings. Overall and Age Group winners are announced at the end of each race window.

FAQs
In the endurance phase, the goal is to ski, row, and run the specified distance as quickly as possible. The transitions are included in your total time, so think of this as one continuous effort.
In the hybrid phase, you will alternate running 800m (0.5 miles) with a strength station. The first is 50 pullups, which should be strict (no kipping) and at bodyweight. Second is 50 burpees where the chest touches the ground, feet leave the air jumping up, and hands extend higher than the ears. Third is 50 sandbag or barbell lunges at 50 lbs for men and 40 lbs for women (25 per leg). Fourth is 50 thrusters with 20 lbs for men and 10 lbs for women where the weight is held at shoulder height, squat down below 90 degrees, and extend weight up over head with locked arms.
In the strength phase, the goal is to move the specified amount of weight from the ground to above your head with arms full extended as quickly as possible. You can choose the weight and type (barbell, dumbbell, sandbag, kettlebell, etc.). For a 1 ton (2000 lbs) example, you could choose to clean and press 20 lbs for 100 reps, 50 lbs for 40 reps, or 100 lbs for 20 reps.
Yes! Workouts can be modified to meet your skill and fitness level, or for equipment limitations. If phases are modified, you will still be entered into the rankings but will not be eligible for awards.
Suggested modifications:
– Swap 2x bike for ski or row
– If no ergs, do all running
– Use band-assisted pullups or rows instead of pullups
– Reduce the weight or do bodyweight lunges and thrusters
To race GRYTR as prescribed, you’ll need:
- Ski erg
- Rower
- Pullup bar
- Sandbag or barbell (50 lbs for men, 40 lbs for women)
- Dumbbell (20 lbs for men, 10 lbs for women)
- Weight of your choice
There are three race windows per year in April, July, and October. During each of those months, racers have the opportunity to submit their results to compete for top spots in their category.
Result submissions are allowed between 12:00AM Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the first day of the month through 11:59:59PM EST on the last day of the month. All three phases must be completed during the race window to be eligible for rankings.
All races are virtual and held at the location of your choice. Race at home, local gym, or on vacation… the choice is yours!
For the ultimate challenge, choose to complete all three phases of your selected distance during a 12-hour window. Anyone who successfully completes all three phases within 12 hours will receive the coveted Dragon Patch to prove your grit.
All phases are scored by total time, including transitions. Overall race time is the sum of each phase and does not include any rest period taken between phases. Final rankings are determined by the overall race time for each category. To be eligible for rankings, you must complete all three phases as prescribed during the appropriate race window.
Note: if a phase is not completed, you will be assessed an automatic time bonus.
During registration, you will receive your race code to allow you to submit your results. Please note that registration closes 1 week prior to the race window.
You may start racing once your race window opens and you’ll need to record your times for each phase. Please see your welcome packet on the specifics for recording splits.
You’ll also need to compile proof of completion, which can be videos or screenshots from your fitness trackers (Garmin, Strava, etc.). You can also document your race on social media and share the link.
Gather your registration code, split times and proof of completion, then submit it all under the Results Submission link.
For early registration, all race distances are $74 plus tax. There are no hidden fees at checkout. Prices go up to $84 one month before the race window opens, so sign up early!
Please note that we are unable to ship gear to addresses outside of the United States.
Sign up for 3 races throughout the year and get 15% off with code TRIPLET26.
The registration fee includes a custom GRYTR Finisher t-shirt, finisher medal, Dragon Patch (if the 12-hour challenge is completed), and a discount on other GRYTR swag. All swag is shipped to the address on your registration approximately 30 days after the race window closes at no additional charge. You’ll also be eligible to compete for leaderboard awards and be listed in our online rankings, along with receiving a digital finisher certificate. Not to mention lifetime bragging rights.
$0 No-Swag Option: If you have enough race t-shirts and don’t want a medal or patch, you can choose to just compete and not receive any physical swag. You’ll be able to be listed in our rankings and compete for leaderboard awards.
There is a NO REFUND policy but you may defer to another race window up to 1 week before your current race window starts.
